DAY 4
D
aniel was swimming through a darkness so heavy he couldn’t remember anything. Where am I?  Daniel thought. He began to hear a voice, was it saying his name? He couldn’t tell, he couldn’t answer his mouth would not cooperating with him. Daniel was aware of a warm wet liquid dropping into his mouth; he slightly parted his lips to catch the liquid to wet his mouth which was parched dry. He tentatively liked it with his tongue which felt heavy and weighted in his mouth.
It was blood, Daniel told himself. He could tell from the smell and the healing effects the liquid was having on his mouth. More blood begun to pour in his mouth and Daniel licked at it greedily. He could feel the healing process of the blood as it coursed through his veins in his body. Instinctively Daniel felt his fangs elongate and latch on to the source of his meal, his fangs begun to pull greedily on the plastic bag placed to his mouth. Daniel’s body begun to feel stronger and whole, soon the bag he was feeding from was empty. Daniel Jumped up from his lying position to stop the hand that was removing his food, as he moved so suddenly his body protested and begun to slumped from the sudden excursion of the little energy he just received from its short meal. “Easy there, you’re not ready to move yet. You need to rest” a voice said as hands helped him back into his ling position. Daniel tried his eyes again and found them opening to reveal Jimmy and Connor standing over him with worried expressions.
Daniel closed his eyes again and the memories begun to come flooding back into his mind. The attack and Connie… Connie where was she? Why couldn’t he feel her in his arms? “Connie- Where is Connie?” Daniel asked. Jimmy and Connor exchanged looks, “We don’t know.” Jimmy replied. “We were called by hospital security, when we arrived we found you unconscious, Mr. Pilgrim dead and a petrified doctor Grosvenor huddled in a corner. Connie was nowhere to be seen.” O’Neal told him. No she was gone, Daniel thought in agony. Daniel pushed his body up, “Daniel don’t move you need to feed and rest” Jimmy protested trying to hold Daniel down with his hands; although Daniel was weak he was still stronger than Jimmy. He pushed away Jimmy’s hands and got up shakily. Daniel sat up on the cot and looked around at the environment surrounding him. Daniel could not remember this room, the last he saw he was in a white sterile room. “Where am I? How did I get here?” Daniel asked looking from Jimmy to O’Neal. “We had to move you to our little hospital her in the PEC” Jimmy replied, “You received extensive damage to your body and we were trying to keep you alive and the hospital don’t carry synthetic blood so that’s why you are here.” Jimmy explained.
Daniel nodded with understanding. He braced himself and pushed his body up from the cot he sat on. His feet begun to give out from the sudden pressure put on them and he had to sit back down. He sighed heavily in frustration, here he was barely able to move and Connie was out there in danger and probably needed help and he couldn’t offer any. “What do we know?” Daniel asked. “We assume that the vampire has her, but we haven’t received any ransom notes or calls as yet.” “We have a team out looking for her trying to track her GPS locator, which she had on thank God.” “The CSI team are doing a sweep of the room to see if we can’t get a clue as to where she might be.” Daniel grunted. “We are doing all we can Daniel, Connie is strong she’ll be fine.” O’Neal said trying to comfort him, so why didn’t he feel comforted? “She is in moon heat O’Neal she isn’t going to be able to perform at her best” Daniel contradicted. Daniel was scared, scared for Connie and scared for them; he prayed that she was safe and ok.

DAY 3
D
aniel rose before the sun; he took a bath got dressed and went down to his car. He stood on the pavement of his car and watched a jogger pass by. Daniel lived in Wanstead Gardens, one of the old residential areas close to the new living complex being erected in the place of the old National Cultural Foundation building. It was a relatively peaceful neighborhood and no one there knew who he really was, after an incident involving a vampire and a little boy last year he decided to keep his identity quite. He got in his car and drove through the quite streets of Wansted, in his rearview mirror he watched the slow ascend of the sun over the sea on the horizon overlooking the area.
The previous nights events came rushing back to him, all the emotions he felt, begun to awaken his senses. He remembered being angry at the vampire that attack them, disgusted at the damage the kite had bestowed on Mr. Pilgrim and damn scare when he rushed back into the house to fine Connie motionless on the floor. But then she had awoken the desire in him with that kiss. That kiss that said a damn lot about how she felt for him, despite the moon fever influence, and he was determine to get her to admit her feelings to him this morning. That’s why he was driving to her house to pick her up, to confront her and to stop her from trying to avoid him. He had got her address from Jimmy last night, who he found out had been one of her dance partners the previous moon phase and the fury of jealousy almost made him say something that he knew he’d regret later. So he kept his mouth closed and fumed inside, besides Connie was nothing to him and he was nothing to her, yet.
Daniel arrived at her house at 6:30am and got out of the car. He walked up the walk to her house. She lived in West Terrace in a terracotta Spanish style house; it was in a quaint neighborhood that was still asleep. He raised his hand to knock when the door opened and Connie stood before him in a black tight jeans and navy blue t shirt which she covered with the PEC blazer to keep the chill of the morning out. They stood looking at each other. Daniel cleared his throat and broke the silence “Good morning. Need a drop to work?” he asked hoping she wouldn’t turn him down, she didn’t answer immediately but stood there looking at him with a confused look on her face. “It’s just a ride Connie. No strings attached I promise.” She sighed and nodded, “Ok” she bent and grabbed her bag from off the floor and followed him down the drive to the car. She got in and buckled up and remained silent as Daniel made his way onto the highway.
Headquarters was an hour drive away so he intended to make the most of it. “I’m glad I caught you this morning there was something I wanted to talk to you about.” Connie gave him an incredulous look, “What?” “You didn’t catch me, you plan this.” “Ok. Well I wanted to talk about the kiss you landed on me last night” “’I thought this was a no strings attach ride?” “If you knew I planned this then you know that that was just a trick to get you in to the car.’ She sighed and nodded in agreement “True.” There was a silence again. “So about that kiss?” “It was the moon fever Daniel, and being knocked around the head didn’t help either so just leave it at that and drop it. Please!” “No I can’t just drop it, because we both know that that was more than moon fever.”  Connie snorted and said; “And you would know this how?”  “Come on Connie you know that there is something more than fever going on between us.” “Really? Well since you are so convinced about that why don’t you enlighten me?” “Why are you fighting this… us?” “Because there is no us, it was just a kiss that happened in the heat of the moon fever.” “Keep using the moon fever as an excuse and keep lying to yourself. Why are you so scared to admit to your feelings?” “Because I have no feelings to admit (to)” “Bullshit!” they were so engrossed in the argument that Daniel almost missed the turn off to headquarters, he pulled into the parking lot and found a space. Connie made a move to open the door, Daniel stopped her, “We are not finished.” “I believe that we are finished.”  ‘Connie we can’t just let it end here” Connie looked into Daniel’s eyes and saw the plea of truth, “Daniel… I…” “Can you honestly tell me that you feel nohing for me?” “Daniel please…” “No Connie, you please. Look me in the eye and tell me that you feel nothing for me and it was all just the consequence of the moon fever.”  She knew she couldn’t lie to herself, but she would have to lie to him, she couldn’t risk going through that type of pain again, but as she opened her mouth to lie the truth came tumbling out, “I do feel something for you Daniel, I really do, but I’m scared. I’m afraid that if I let myself love you then I will lose you like my brother and I know I could never live through your death, I wouldn’t be able to live without you. “That’s all I need to hear” Daniel said. He pulled her towards her, lowered his head to hers and kissed her. Daniel allowed himself to open up and pour all the emotions of passion and desire that he felt for her in the kiss. Connie could feel Daniel’s emotions, they swarmed her and she was drowning in them, at the beginning it scared her to her core, but then she relaxed and found herself answering his kiss, her passion to his passion, her desire to his, and it overwhelmed her.
The kiss wore on till they both had to break away and gasp for air, it had left them booth panting in unison. Daniel looked at her and smiled and it sent ripples of joy through her soul, she returned his smile and felt herself blush. Daniel kissed her again more softly this time. “I’m not worried about the future, so don’t you be ok” he said as he caressed her cheek, she nodded since she couldn’t answer yet. Daniel kissed her again, “I think we should go” “I agree we need to get to work before O’Neal comes looking for us.” “We should have been in there ten minutes ago” Connie said and Daniel laughed “I guess we were otherwise entertain” “I guess so” Connie replied. They got out the car and walk to the PEC headquarters building for Barbados. “By the way, Daniel said as he held the door opened for her, I’m going to the moon dance with you tonight” Connie looked up at him surprised but saw that he was serious, “Ok.”
How was she to say no to that face, Daniel had begun to break through the walls around her heart, and she didn’t know if she could stop it, or if she wanted to. They walked to the office, and sure enough O’Neal was there waiting for them. “Where were you two? Didn’t I say seven o’ clock on the dot?” he asked, Connie blushed, “Sorry sir we were a little side tracked” Daniel replied. “I talked to the head of homeland securities, and he agrees that we needed to pull out all the stops and pool our resources with every defense system on the island. So let me introduce Miss Goodman head of The Barbados Sea Division of Cadets, Mr. Gordon head of The Land Division of Cadets, Commandant of The Barbados Cadets; Lt. Colonel Carson Sanders and Mr. Montel representative from the FBI. Mr. Olsen why don’t you debrief the rest of the team while I have a private conversation with Agent DaVel and McGuire.”
“Yes sir” Jimmy replied O’Neal took Connie and Daniel outside. “Now do you want to explain what made you nearly half an hour late this morning?” he asked them, Connie and Daniel exchanged looks, each wondering how much they should say and who should say it. “It was my fault sir, I woke up late and forgot that I was supposed to pick up Agent DaVel this morning.” Daniel confessed, O’Neal looked at them suspiciously and Connie cringed under his gaze. “Well...ok, I need you both to go to the hospital and Connie I need you to try and read Mr. Pilgrim see if we can’t figure out more about this kite. Then I want you to take the rest of the team and go back to the hut see if you can’t pick up anything else. Am I clear?’ “Yes sir.”
“I’ll drive” Daniel said as they got into the car to go to the hospital. “ok” Connie said. She was silent for awhile looking out the window at the passing cars. “Daniel, were you serious when you said that you wanted to dance with me this evening?” “Yes. Why?” “Just wondering” Connie replied as her heart went into overdrive, a blush colored her cheeks as she turned away so that Daniel couldn’t see. “You do understand the intent of the moon dance?” Connie asked. “Of course. Do you?” Daniel asked teasing her, he could see the blush on her face and it was lovely, he reached out and stroked it. He heard her gasp as she inhaled sharply, and then blushed more.
They pulled into the hospital when Daniel said” Connie would please stop worrying, and relax” “How can I after what you just said, you have my fever burning in over time” she confessed, from the moment Daniel touched her it was hard to really concentrate on anything else, the moon fever had rage to life within her and was now burning  in overdrive throughout her body making her a walking furnace, every nerve end was alive and attune to his touch and his smell and the closeness of his body heat. Connie needed to get it under control before they went into the hospital unless she would have every male falling over her and they wouldn’t understand why.
“Really?” Daniel asked with a hint of mischief in his eye, he begun to lower his head to her lips but she stopped him,” Daniel I don’t think that this is the right time to be doing this.” Connie said although she really wanted t do it, her fever was burning her to allow Daniel to kiss her, but she couldn’t not right then she needed to stay focus and concentrate, they were on a job and was at the hospital to see a witness. “You’re right. Tonight…” he said with heavy suggestions of what to expect dripped in his voice.
They made their way into the hospital, Daniel flashed his badge and asked to see Mr. Pilgrim and they were lead to a private room on the first floor. Outside the door sat a woman and a little girl, “Good morning Mrs. Pilgrim, these people are with PEC they wish to see you husband ma’am.” The doctor said Mrs. Pilgrim looked up to them, Connie gasped as she looked into her eyes, there was barely any life left in those eyes, all Connie could see was death, and despair. It was as if she was looking at an empty shell. Connie couldn’t help but shudder, Daniel squeezed her hand and she looked into his eyes for assurance.
“Ok” Mrs. Pilgrim replied with no life in her voice. “Is it me or was that a little creepy?” Connie asked, “Mrs. Pilgrim had to be sedated a few times, after her husband came in and she saw him she went in to shock and became hysteric, so we had to sedate her to calm her down.” The doctor explained. The doctor carried them into a sterile room with a dozen machines surrounding a bed which held Mr. Pilgrim. “How is he doing?” Daniel asked. “He is failing, we had to put him on life support and we almost lost him twice. Whatever it is that attacked him did a number on him.” The doctor replied as she tucked the sheet around Mr. Pilgrim under him. Connie looked around the sterile white room and cringed, the pain in the room was dampening her spirit she didn’t know if she would be able to stay conscious. “Connie did you hear me?” Daniel asked bringing her out of her reprieve. “Huh?” “Are you alright?” “I’m fine. Let’s get this done quickly” “Ok. What do you sense?”
Connie let down her shields and was blasted with emotions of pain and rage it almost choked her, she stumbled back under the weight of their force, Daniel caught her hand. She closed her eyes and concentrated on taking deep breaths, and trying to steady her heart and breathing. Once she had them under control she proceeded to try and read Mr. Pilgrim. She walked up to his bed, taking a deep breath Connie placed her hand on Mr. Pilgrim’s forehead, she begun to prod and probe but she could get nothing. All she was reading and feeling was a dense darkness; it was surreal and vastly almost creepy quiet. “What do you see?” Daniel asked her. “There’s nothing here. It’s like his whole memory, life has been erased.” “What! How is that possible? Is it even possible?” Daniel asked astonished. “It can be done by someone vastly experience in mind control, but that ability is very rare.” “I guess we have to tell the chief that this is a dead end” Connie was about to pull away and agree with him when a flash of color appeared in Mr. Pilgrim’s mind, “Wait... I think there is something here” Connie exclaimed. Connie begun to dig deeper and the monitors begun to beep loudly and erratically, “You need to stop, his brain can’t take anymore of this.” The doctor said. “There!” Connie exclaimed, “What is it? What do you see?” Daniel asked frantically. “It looks like the hut, but the image isn’t clear” the beeping begun to get more consistent as Connie dug deeper to unravel the images, “Mrs. DaVel I must ask you to stop you are killing him” “Just another minute doc.” Daniel pleaded; this could be the breakthrough they needed to solve this case.
The images begun to come more rapidly flowing now and becoming so jumble and tangled that Connie was having a hard time deciphering their meanings, she heard the doctors voice as she pleaded for Connie to pull away, but that was going to be hard, Connie realized that she was so tangled in this web, it felt like a strong current pulling her and she couldn’t release it, “Connie, Connie let go, Connie your shaking” Daniel shouted, she hadn’t realize but she couldn’t. Suddenly the vampire appeared, she tried to withdraw, but the mind grasp was so strong, she hadn’t realize its strength at first, when did it get so strong? “Connie” she heard Daniel’s voice pleading but it was getting weaker and further away, she tried to say something but all her motor skills were locked. The vampire reached out, Connie tried to back away but there was no place to go, nowhere to turn. True fear gripped her heart. Then he lunged grabbing her hands her mind, a searing pain flashed through her brain like a bolt of lightning, she screamed Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!
“Connie! Connie! Connie please say something” Daniel begged. Daniel, she cried out but it didn’t come from her mouth, “You are mine” the vampire said leering at her, hovering over her unmoving uncooperative body. Daniel watched as Connie bodied slumped over Mr. Pilgrim’s body and slide off, he reached out and caught her in his arms before she hit the floor. He cradled her unmoving body in his arms; he shook her, “Connie? Connie open your eyes” Daniel begged, but there was no response. She just lay in his arms as if dead, he pulled her to his chest and hugged her close, no please no Daniel begged in his head, he couldn’t lose her not now, not after she confessed her love for him, they were just beginning.
Right then a loud screeching sound resounded throughout the hospital bouncing off the walls and resounded in the air. Daniel stifled a scream from the pain that shot through his ears and pierced his mind, he reflexively covered his ears. The sound repeated again and again. Daniel and the doctor convulsed on the floor holding their heads as pain after shooting pain shot through his searing head. Then it suddenly went quiet. Daniel struggled to sit up and hold Connie in his arms, an airy mist swept into the room. Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh! A blood curling scream filled the room; it came from the doctor who was huddled in the corner pointing a shaky finger to the roof of the room. Daniel looked up and gasped in horror the kite had entered the room. Daniel reached for his laser that had dropped from his breast pocket, but before he could reach it the kite swooped down on him, he ducked to avoid it but he felt it brush his arm. He looked down to see a small pucker mark on his arm. Again and again it swooped in on him, Daniel used his body to cover Connie as the kite attack him. Daniel looked up to see why it had suddenly stopped. It hovered over him looking at him, Daniel’s exposed body parts were covered with pucker marks, Daniel begun to feel weak from the rape of nutrients from his body. He tried to get up but his strength had left him. The kite begun to materialize in front of him, oh no I have to move protect Connie he said in his mind. The kite came towards him and looked straight in his eyes, fear hugged Daniel’s heart like never before as he looked into the kite’s eyes. He begun to drown in the depths of those hideous death ridden eyes and lose himself, Daniel knew he had to fight unless he and Connie would die. Daniel tried to lunge but a searing pain shot through his body shaking him to his core. He slumped over Connie’s body, the last thing he saw was her beautiful lips, then the darkness enveloped him and took him to their depths, and he knew no more.

DAY 2
C
onnie came in early the next day, she was rested and full from the dance the following night, not one of her best nights, seeing as she didn’t take part in the dance but that would soon change three more days to go before full moon and hopefully the case would be over so she could partake in the dance without any hindrance. She was so deep in thought that she didn’t hear when Daniel came in until he sat in his chair and sighed heavily, she turned to look at his exhausted features.
“Are you ok?” she asked, he shook his head” I just came back from debriefing the force” “You were debriefing the whole night?” she asked in shock. “No we were sparring, I was trying to teach the men how to handle the vamp and the kite if they should encounter it. “Let me guess it didn’t go well” “After two years of knowing that these things, creatures exist and are real in their world, you would think they would have gotten training are be at least open to the suggestion of it, but no they were all stubborn, and pigheaded saying that the methods they knew would be enough to keep them alive on the field” “And what did you tell them?” “I told them that their methods were antiquated and weak and that they would all be dead if they didn’t listen to me” “I figure that did not go over well with the men?” Daniel snorted,”Of course not they flat out decided not to take my advice so I gave up and left” “Daniel you have to understand that these men are terrified. They are now faced with things that they believe only existed in Hollywood. Now they have to believe and face our species and the mad humans on a daily basis, and they are not cut out for it, they are scared shitless, and they don’t want to learn new tricks because that would mean accepting the truth about the underworld.” “So what do you suggest? That I sit back and let these men get themselves killed? I don’t think I can do that Connie” “Of course not, but maybe you could try reaching them from another angle” “Like what?” “How about letting them teach you some of the moves they know and then you show them how their moves can be perfected to kill someone like us.” Daniel studied her for awhile, she really was an amazing woman and he wondered if she saw herself that way. “Ok I will give it a try thanks.” “No problem, anytime.” The ringing of the phone interrupted their conversation. Daniel answered it from his line. He shot up out of his chair and she reacted similarly from the shock on his face, she tried to catch the other side of the conversation, “We have a hit.” “Where?” Daniel asked, “Some guy called in a few minutes ago and gave a tip said he saw some strange things going on in a house when he was on a hiking trail the other day, he said he thought he saw a vampire.” “What! How?” “I don’t know but he also said the place smelt like if something was dead for a while.” “What is the address?” “It was up on Hacklettons Cliff, there aren’t any roads up there but he said he would show us where it is if we needed his help.” “Ok what’s his name and where do we pick him up?” “Mr. Pilgrim and he lives in Green Pond # 12 St. Andrew.” “Ok tell him we’ll be there in twenty minutes.” “What’s up?” Connie asked after Daniel hung up as she got her gear together, “We have a tip on a probable location for our sneak vamp and kite.” “Great lets go” they exited their office and Connie locked the door, they went down to the sublevel and got their car, they drove on to Station Hill and made their way on to the ABC highway. Daniel drove through the traffic quickly by using the lights and siren and made it to Mr. Pilgrim’s home in time. They got out the car and made their way up the drive to the door, Daniel was just about to ring the bell when the door opened to reveal a stout black man with a round middle, his afro was cut short in a tidy bob, and a cigar hung from his mouth.
“Mr. Pilgrim? I’m Agent McGuire this is Agent DaVel. We were told that you were willing to guide us to the house you passed the other day.” “Am I going to get pay? “I am sure we can come to some agreement.”Daniel offered. Mr. Pilgrim nodded his head, turned to his right and picked up a shotgun, “That will not be necessary Mr. Pilgrim we are already armed.” “I ain’t picking dis up fah you, dis is for my protection.” “Again Mr. Pilgrim it is not required we are more than equipped to protect ourselves and you.” “If I can’t carry it I ain’t comin.” Connie touched Daniel’s arm and shook her head, “Ok Mr. Pilgrim we will do this your way, let’s go” Connie said. They took the country route driving through St. Joseph before going on to St. John, Mr. Pilgrim directed their path through a dirt road, when the car could go no further they got out and continued on foot.
They were silent as they made their way up Hacklettons Cliff, they followed Mr. Pilgrim as they made their way through knee high bush and forest. It was very quiet and still as they walked along an uncharted path, Connie let down her shields as they walked touching the forest she brushed thoughts with the wildlife habitation in the immediate area, but she didn’t come upon anything unusual, though that didn’t mean they weren’t there, she told herself, she knew that vampire barely gave off a sent as they bedded down for the day, she was going to have to be extra vigilant. They had gone a few more paces when a scent of death hit them full on.
“It’s up dare” Mr. Pilgrim pointed to a small hut barely visible through the surrounding growth of plant life. Connie stopped breathing, thank God for her vampire skills though they were only half of what she was. “Wait here.”Daniel told Mr. Pilgrim as he and Connie move towards the house to get a better look. They made their way cautiously up the incline to the hut. Daniel stopped a few feet away and crouched behind a bolder covered with over growth. He wasn’t breathing either, though vampires didn’t have to breathe only when they wanted to taste the air or talk for long periods of times, most vampires breathed to appear human so as not to alert humans to their presence. “So what’s the plan?’ Connie asked, crouching beside him, he paused to look around her then took a breath, “Gosh that thing is awful” Daniel commented as he had to take a breath to talk. Connie nodded in agreement, “First things let’s turn on our locators to be safe.” The PEC inventors had created GPS locators as small as an ant and had them surgical placed in the hard gristle of the ear they were activated by touching the earring on the earlobe used as an intercom piece.  O’Neal had made it mandatory a year ago after a tragic accidents;  one of their officers out in the field was kidnapped and never found, not even the remains of his body,  that all PEC personnel was to be outfitted with these pieces and activate them upon engaging in any dangerous field work. Connie touched her earring lightly and activated the GPS. “Ok what next?” “We’ll make a full sweep around the perimeter before we go in.” Connie nodded, “Ok” “Did you pick up anything on our way here?” Daniel asked “No, but I haven’t try here as yet” “Ok give it a go then we’ll move.” Connie let down her shields one by one and hesitantly reached out to read the hut, at first she wasn’t touching anything then she got hit by a fist full of fowl thoughts of vulgar passion and death, she retracted and quickly replaced her shields, she breathed shakily for awhile then gather her thoughts and thought calm thoughts then turned her attentions towards Daniel.
“I believe our vampire is asleep in there.” Connie said, Daniel nodded “Ok good what about the kite?” Connie tried again but got no reading that it was even there, she shook her head “Nothing, but it can still be here remember we aren’t really clear on what it is capable off.” Daniel nodded in agreement and understanding. “Ok you ready?” Connie took two deep breaths dragging in the foul smell deep in to her lungs she almost gagged but was able to keep it together. “Yes I am ready. Let’s go.”
They stealthy made their way up towards the house; they stood with their back to the wall crouching under the window. Daniel held up his hand and counted down 1-2-3 go, he mouthed they separated and each took an opposite wall as they made their way around the house. Connie could hear Daniel’s cool precise breathing in her hair, coming through the com link. “I’m at the front and going in cover me.” “Ok.” She watched as he tested the door it gave way in his hand easily and swung open inward allowing them to see the first room in the house. It was dark and drab; it was obviously uninhabited for quite some time. The wood was being eaten by the termites and falling away they soon found out that the floor was rickety and uneven and kept noise when they walked on it. Daniel pointed to his eyes then down a pair of steps off to his right; Connie nodded in understanding and followed him closely as he made his way down the stairs.
The floor boards creaked under their weight and groaned from the pressure, all this time Connie had her shields half way down to allow her to be aware of any movement from their sleeping friend. She stopped Daniel and pointed to her left to let him know that the vampire was there, he nodded ok. They changed direction and went to the left, Connie’s foot hit a trap door and she shone the light from her laser, which they had on and at the ready, on to the floor. Connie saw the handle and bent to open it, “Careful” Daniel implored her. She nodded; she took a deep breath and slowly opened the trap a made no noise on the way up, laying on the floor beneath the door was their vampire fast asleep.
“He looks so damn peaceful” Connie commented “Well we know looks can be deceiving” “So what do you want to do, take him in our take him out?” Daniel pondered the question for awhile. He was about to answer when a scream of pain and fear rent the air and Connie fell to her knees in agony from experiencing the pain of the dying man. The scream woke the vampire and he shot up out of the trap and straight at them so fast that they barely got out the way.
It turned around and came at them, Daniel charged and took it head on, Connie was still immobile on the floor trying to pull herself out of the abyss of pain and death of Mr. Pilgrim. “Connie! Connie Damn it answer me” she heard a grunt of pain and a sharp snap as bone was broken, as the vampire and Daniel fought on the floor a foot away from her, Connie tried to answer but could get no answer out, she tried to put her shields up to protect herself. She was able to put up enough to look up and take stock of what was going on in front of her, she reached out for her laser, which had been knocked out her hand as the vampire first dove for them, she grabbed aimed and fired just as it was about to take a bite out of Daniel’s neck. It hissed out in pain as smoke and the smell of burnt flesh filled the air, she wasn’t able to get a clear shot of his head to totally take him out due to the tears blurring her vision, but she was able to wound it, it hissed at her again and turned and ran out of the room. Daniel came over to her side, “Are you ok?” “Yes I’ll be fine. Go! Go after it; see if Mr. Pilgrim is ok. I’ll be there soon.” “Are you sure?” “Yes go now Daniel” Daniel ran up the stairs and out the door. Connie tried to stand up and stumbled. She placed her hands on the wall and slowly pulled herself up, she leaned against the wall panting from the exertion of getting up, she took a shaky step forward and almost fell again she held onto the wall for support. She closed her eyes and took three deep steadying breaths, opened them and took another determine step forward. She made it up the stairs and collapsed on the floor above them. She sat there for awhile thinking calming thoughts and trying to slow her breathing down.
She listened to the forest and realized that everything had gone quite, too quite, almost deadly quite. Where is Daniel she thought, she couldn’t smell anything either. She got up slowly testing her strength, she looked around her, there was no one here, she was alone, and where was Daniel and Mr. Pilgrim? She moved towards the door. “Daniel! Mr. Pilgrim!” nothing, no answer, she made a move to open the door and a searing pain ripped through her defenses and straight to her brain, she fell in pain, her body could take no more not another attack and gave up. Gave her up to the darkness that always threatened to close in on her,  Connie felt herself falling down-down-down into the abyss of darkness with no way of stopping it, she lost herself in it.
Connie awoke with a searing headache and the sound of her name vibrating in her head, she tried to open her eyes but it was difficult, instead she laid still and listened to the sounds assaulting her ears. “How long has she been out?” “I’m not sure I found her lying there about half an hour ago.” She recognized Daniel’s voice talking to another man, whose voice she could not place but it sounded very familiar. The raging pain in her head was making it impossible to form any relevant and coherent thoughts. She tried to open her eyes again and this time they begun to cooperate, she had them fully open to shut them again from the blare of the light shining through them which brought on another onslaught of searing pain to her head and she moaned. “Connie? Connie can you hear me? Are you awake?” Daniel asked coming closer, she tried to say something but her mouth was so parched and dry, she tried to swallow. “Water” it came out in a hoarse whisper. “I think she needs some water.” Daniel said. Jimmy brought him a bottle; Daniel took her head in his hand and propped it up as he brought the bottle to her mouth. She gulped the water down, “Slowly let her drink slowly, she has a concussion.” Jimmy warned, as soon as the water hit her mouth Connie gulped at the water and swallowed it greedily, but she was too fast, as quickly as it had gone down it came right back up. She turned her head, which caused her pain, and emptied her stomach unto the floor; she coughed as she almost strangled on her own vomit. She took three long breaths to steady her stomach. “Are you ok now?” Daniel asked, she begun to shake her head and hissed as she forgot about her headache, “Yes. Thanks.”
Connie open her eyes and looked up into Daniel’s beautiful face, wow, she thought how could I have missed just how beautiful he is? She asked herself, those eyes that looked at her and made her melt inside Connie sighed, and those lips, those luscious lips that look good enough to devour. As Connie studied Daniel’s face she became unaware of her audience and the fact that her hand had come up to caress the side of Daniel’s face. Daniel stared in shock at the caress and outright showcase of affection that Connie was displaying, all be it totally unaware of her audience. I want to kiss those lips and taste them she thought, the moon fever burned to raging life in her body and spiked to a new level of pure heat, lust and passion. She brought her head up slowly on level with his; she looked into his eyes and saw amazement, shock and desire.  Connie closed her eyes and leaned into his lips. At the first contact of their lips Daniel went rigid. The fever in Connie’s body surged to life, making her bolder with the kiss and she deepened it as she tried to state the hunger that the fever had arisen in her.
Someone coughed and cleared their throat and Connie was snapped back to the present, she pulled away from Daniel with eyes opened with shock, she covered her mouth with shock. They sat there staring at each other for awhile, “Well I hate to break up this love fest, but Connie assuming you are done can we get on with this investigation?” Connie turned her full attention to the speaker and gasped with shock and embarrassment, standing in front of her was their boss Mr. O’Neal. Oh shit I’m in for it now, Connie thought, never mix work with pleasure was always her rule. However Connie now had not only broken that rule but had done it all too willingly in front of her boss and as she looked around she realized a room full of PEC agents and operatives. “I’m…I’m sorry sir” she apologized looking away from him and blushing deeply, Daniel rose to his feet beside her and stretched out his hand to help her stand, she ignored it and got too her own feet, she swayed and Daniel reached out and grasped her arm in his hand to steady her. Connie didn’t, couldn’t look at Daniel, what she just did would certainly have an impact on their relationship in the near future.
“Can I get some blood?” Connie asked Jimmy who she knew kept a pack of refrigerated blood in his kit. “Sure” he rummaged around and pulled out a clear see through iv bag, Connie inhaled the blood allowing the scent to begin the process of her fangs elongating then sank her fangs into the blood and drank from it deeply, she repeated this process three time till she was full. Jimmy discarded the bag and they turned their attention towards O’Neal, “I’m really sorry about that boss” Connie apologized again she felt Daniel go stiff beside her, those probably were not the best choice of words to use. O’Neal held up his hand “No explanation necessary Agent DaVel, circumstances pending I understand your condition. While I don’t condone them, make sure it doesn’t happen frequently” he said with a slight smile, Connie blushed again “Yes sir.” “Right! Unto business. What happened?”
Daniel proceeded to inform O’Neal about the tip and the attack from the vampire and kite, Mr. Pilgrim had suffered irreversible damage to his body and was in intensive care at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. O’Neal listened to the report with a wary expression on his face. “Well it seems that we have met our match with this one. I want you to go home get some rest and be at headquarters bright and early tomorrow morning we have to stop this thing even if it means pooling all our resources.” “Yes sir” she Daniel said as one, O’Neal turned and looked at her. “Oh and Connie get a dance you look like hell” O’Neal ordered Connie blushed and a few snickers were heard around the hut.”, “Right away sir.” “Good see you at seven o’ clock tomorrow morning. Agent Crone escort Agent DaVel and McGuire to their car and make sure they get home, Jimmy you go as well.” “Yes sir” they replied.
All four of them made their way down Hackeltton’s Cliff silently, they got in the car. Daniel had hoped that they would be driving alone to question her about the kiss but now that they had company he didn’t think it would be appropriate our acceptable for Connie. Also it looked like she was trying to avoid talking to him so he let it drop and watch her closely as Jimmy and Warren drove her to Papa G’s bar then dropped him home. Before he went to sleep he promised himself that he will confront her about the kiss first thing tomorrow. Daniel went to sleep with the kiss still on his mind, filling his dreams of Connie and him together.

DAY 1
C
onnie sat at her desk writing her report on the previous night’s events, she paused for a moment listening to the movement of feet up and down the hall outside the office, she heard Daniel’s footsteps coming to the door, three minutes later the knob turned and Daniel walked in, he looked better, and a little flush which meant that he had feed recently, unlike her she knew she was pushing it she hadn’t feed in three days and now that the moon fever was raging within her body she was not doing herself any favors she needed to find a willing donor and fast.
“Good morning” Daniel said, she nodded. She watched him as he went around the office tiding then pouring a cup of coffee from the perk machine. She watched him closely, the way every muscle rippled and flexed under his skin tight shirt when he moved his arms to reach the files on the top shelf, imagining how they would feel wrapped around her waist, pulling her close, and those hands that handled the intricate detail of office work, handling the intricate details of her body… “Connie are you listening to me?” Daniel asked her, snapping her out of her daydream of Daniel’s arms wrapped around her body. “Um no, sorry” “Are you ok?” she knew what he meant with that question, he wanted to know if the moon fever was effecting her, the truth she thought ,was she need to get it back under control and stop dreaming of Daniel  and her together as if there was any possibility of that. “Yeah I’m great.” She lied.
There was a knock at the door, “Come in” “Daniel, Connie” Jimmy the head of forensics for the PEC greeted them as he came in holding a file in his hand. “Is that the forensics for the last body?” Connie asked “Yes and I have some interesting news” Jimmy said, he handed the file to Daniel, and Connie went to his desk and read it with him. The file specified how the woman died the time of death and a detailed description of the body. “Look at what we found under her nails” Jimmy said, they read the excerpt then looked at each other. “This is very interesting” Daniel said “Yes seeing this is the first lead we’ve had in weeks.” Jimmy replied. Just then there was a beep announcing that the head of PEC was on line via satellite, Connie touched the intercom button and their fae boss Connor O’Neal’s face filed the screen. “Good morning sir” “Connie, Daniel, Jimmy, what is the latest news?” “The results are in sir and we have our first lead for weeks” Daniel said “Good, what did we get from forensics’?” “We were able to extract some DNA from the skin captured under the young woman’s nails, and the test results said it is from a vampire about two to three hundred years old.” Jimmy said summarizing the important details from the file. “Good that should narrow down the field considerably, what else do we have?” Daniel and Connie exchanged looks, and she nodded. “Well sir there is something else. Last night at the scene we were attacked…” “By some kind of ghostly looking thing, it smelled of death and decaying flesh…’ “But neither Connie nor I was able to get a read off of it.” Daniel commented. “Hum very Strange indeed. Were you able to get a good look at it?” “I believe so sir” Connie relied. “Good send a detailed description and I’ll have Edna do some research see what we are dealing with.” Connor disappeared.
Bringggggggggggggggg! The phone rang then, Daniel answered it. There was a long silence as he listened to the caller; if Connie wanted to she could have easily heard what the caller was saying by using her werewolf hearing but she waited until Daniel finished the call. “We have to go there’s been another murder.” He announced, “What!” “Where?” “Illaro Court” oh no Connie thought,”Not the First lady?” “No, the mistress apparently.” Daniel and Connie gathered their field gear and went down to their designated car. They were silent as they drove to the Prime minister’s residence in. When they got to the scene the police had already cornered off the scene, and forensics and the CSI team were already in place. She and Daniel put on their booties and cloves and pulled on their blazers and made their way over to the crime scene.
Within three feet of the scene Connie stumbled, and doubled over with pain holding her head, she cried out as she tried to block out the emotions from the murder invading her mind and her very soul. “Connie, Connie can you hear me?” Daniel asked kneeling in front of her, he reached out to touch her, “No don’t, please don’t touch me.” Connie pleaded with him, as tears streamed down her face from the force of the emotions forcing themselves in and saturating her mind and senses; they overflowed into her pours and her being, making it impossible for her to be touched. “Have you fed recently?” “What?” “I asked, have you fed recently?” Connie tried to shake her head, no. “You should have, it would make your shields stronger.” She cried out in pain again, and she began to shake, “no not here not now Connie.  Keep it together now is not the time to change, you hear me, pull it together.”Daniel demanded, with all these people around now was not the time for her to shift, Connie nodded her head that she understood. “I’m going to give you some of my blood ok.” “No!” Connie shouted. “Why not? It will help you.” “No, we will be linked forever.” She forced through her clenched teeth, she held her head in her hands again, the pain was becoming excruciating, if she didn’t get blood now she would have to change and right now with the moon fever burning within her it would not be the best thing to do, but very dangerous. “Is that such a bad thing, you need blood Connie, right now. Now stop arguing and drink.” Daniel demanding, he bit into his arm and lowered his wrist to her mouth, Connie pulled away shaking her head no, “Dam it Connie stop being so stubborn. Drink Now!”
Connie could smell the blood, it smelt warm, rich and full of life, the pull was too strong to ignore for long, she grabbed Daniel’s wrist and put it to her mouth. She inhaled deeply then drank. Daniel’s blood poured into her mouth warm and smooth filling her body with the nutrients it needed to survive.  Daniel hissed from the contact and pull of Connie’s fangs on his skin. She moaned as the blood coursed through her body, filling her with warmth and life, Daniel’s blood was rich and strong. Connie could taste his desires, and see his past and his thoughts as clear as day. She knew now that they were forever linked, there was no turning back. After a few moments she forced herself to stop and pulled away from Daniel’s wrist. She closed her eyes and breathed slowly to get her heart and pulse under control, and then she concentrated hard and erected her shields to keep out the onslaught of the emotions from the crime scene.
“How do you feel?” Daniel asked, she opened her eyes and looked into his, she could get lost in those eyes she thought, so much warmth and unrevealed love were held in there depths, she closed her eyes shook her head and mentally kick herself, keep focused she told herself, she opened her eyes and looked at Daniel, “I feel better, thank you.” He nodded “You’re welcome, do you think you can stand?” “Yeah, sure thanks.” He took her hand and helped her to her feet, she swayed a little and he gripped her arm firmly in his after a few more deep breaths she was good. They walked over to the body hand in hand.
“Detective Malone, Agents DaVel, McGuire” the officer greeted them, they shook hands cordially. “What do we have?” Daniel asked, “Seems to be the same MO of the previous murders, it is obvious we are not dealing with a human here.” Malone stated “No we are not. It is a vampire and an unknown species.”Daniel said, silence followed this statement, everyone became solemn as they looked at the young woman brutally murder in front of them, she was carved down the middle with both her breast severed from her chest and bite marks littered her body, there were also pucker marks along the right half of her body. “Do we have more flesh for DNA analysis?’ Connie asked Jimmy who was crouched by the body taking samples from under the nails, “It would seem so, hopefully it should confirm the first analysis and test results.”  Connie nodded. “Is it here? Can you feel it?” Daniel asked, she knew he was talking about the creature, “I don’t know I haven’t tried to see if it is here.” “Do you think you can?” Connie nodded, she took a deep breath, closed her eyes and concentrated, she thought peaceful thoughts as she begun to take down shield after shield, then she surged forth allowing her senses to resonate from her, touching and tasting every feeling with in a hundred yards from the, the she went out further to a mile, but there wasn’t anything there. Connie replaced the shields around her mind but not before briefly catching a glimmer of thought that passed through Daniel’s mind.
“I didn’t feel anything.” Connie told Daniel, who stood closely by her side watching every move she made with care in his eyes.”I couldn’t sense anything either.” “But that doesn’t mean it is not here, remember we still don’t know what this thing is” Jimmy stated, and that was the fear factor to this case. After they finished analyzing the crime scene Daniel and Connie made their way back to the office to write up another report. They were driving back when Daniel broke the silence, “Why didn’t you want to take my blood?” he asked taking his eyes of the road to look at her, not that he need to watch the road with his vampire senses Daniel could navigate any road without seeing it. Connie didn’t answer him at first but she looked in his eyes and decided that he deserved to know the truth. “After my twin brother died I haven’t allowed anyone in to my head. For years it was just me and my thought with no intrusions. I built up multiple shields around my mind and conscience to keep people out; I didn’t want to feel that kind of pain again.” She replied then sat silent for awhile, “I wasn’t there when he died, but I felt it I lived the horror, I experienced everything he went through, all the pain and anguish and hurt, and it damn near killed me as well, if my mum and dad were not there to pull me out of his agony and the abyss of his death I would be with my brother now, but I am not, I am here, forced to live among the agony and suffering of others. And now that I have drunk your blood I will be able to feel your pains, your joys and your hurts, and I’m not sure if I am strong enough to live this way again.”
Daniel looked at her and watched her as she explain her hesitation, he could see the pain in her eyes read it on her face and could feel it in his soul, he could understand how she felt living through a similar horror, but with twin siblings who were also empathic and telepathically linked feelings would be intensified, he could sympathize with her, but he wanted to do more than that, he wanted to be the one to comfort her, to hold her to his chest and tell her that everything would be fine, that he would be there to protect her, but he wasn’t sure if she was ready for that, ready to love again, so he would wait.  “Now do you understand why I didn’t want to drink from you” she said breaking through his train of thoughts. “Yes, I understand and I am sorry about your brother, however I think it may be time to break down a little of those shields.” He saw her open her mouth to interject but spoke before she could, “You can’t be alone forever Connie, eventually you are going to have to let someone in.” she didn’t reply but remain silent for the rest of the ride to the office.
They got back to the office and Connie still had yet to speak, maybe he was a little harsh and incentivize back in the car, he probably should apologize, he was about to when Connie stopped him, “Don’t” she said sitting down in front her desk, “Don’t what?’ Daniel asked, she gave him an incredulous look, “Don’t apologize; there is nothing to apologize for. You are right I can’t be alone for the rest of my life.” “How did you know that I was … ah yes. You can hear my thoughts now, right? ““If I wanted to.” “So you had an inclination to read my thoughts just now?” “More like feel what you were thinking, yes and I am sorry I did not mean to eardrop, a slip of concentration.” “So do you constantly have to concentrate to keep your shields up?” “No. but the moon fever burning in me and the lack of feeding is making it difficult to enforce my shields.” “I thought that vampire’s were empathic?” “More telepathic, and influential, and my gift could break through your shields any day without a problem.” “Really? I don’t think so.” “Would you like to put it to the test?” Daniel asked, challenging her to a little friendly rivalry, “Maybe, after the moon dance.”
“About that, what exactly is a moon dance?” “What do you want to know about it?” “What exactly does a moon dance mean?” “It is what it says, but it is more like an orgy, of lust and blood. Werewolves meet in one place to dance and mate with their chosen’s for the duration of the moon fever period.” “Interesting!” “Very” Connie replied with a grin. The door opened after a brief knock and Jimmy entered, “Sorry to interrupt you but you guys should read this, it’s the forensic report on the Prime Minister’s mistress, Danielle Churchill; twenty-six, healthy and obviously sexually active, now for the bad news, she died between four and five this morning where she was raped, tortured and sucked dried by our vampire from the previous murders, now the interesting freaky part, it appears that that creature you saw at Thursday night’s murder was also involved. We found the same pucker marks on the right half of her body on the underside, Reggie, our resident biologis/chemist, says that it appears that whatever that thing is, it is sucking the nutrients out of her skins, all traces of vitamins and natural oils and such are no longer present in the body.” “Is this pattern consistent with the other bodies?” Connie asked, “After going over each body yes the pattern is the same, the only difference is the mutilation of the women’s body after the process has been completed.” “We have to call Connor immediately.” Daniel said. Right then there was a beeping sound and Mr. O’Neal’s face filled the screen, “Did I hear my name called?” I wonder how he does that, Connie thought shuddering at how creepy his entrance was it was like he could hear or sense them calling his name from way over in Canada.
“Sir we just got the report from forensics and it appears that this creature is sucking the natural oils and nutrients from the victims’ bodies.” “Also their souls have been tortured somehow” Connie interjected; Daniel turned and looked at her, “When were you going to tell me this?” “I just realize why the crime scenes are so hard on my empathic skills, the soul of each victim has been there at every scene, and it is their emotions that I am reading not the vampires””Are you sure about this Agent DaVel?” “Yes sir that could be the only plausible explanation for why my shields are being so easily broached, the souls are there crying out. They are trying to tell me what happened to them.” McGuire was silent as he pondered what Connie just said, “If you are right then I believe we have a good idea what we are dealing with, I had the team do a search on the description you gave us, adding the information you just gave me I am positive that we are dealing with a species of creature that we thought was extinct and is greatly dangerous than any creature of the underworld we have yet to encounter thus far. It is called a Kite; it feeds of the body’s natural essence and adds the souls for good measure, no one knows where they originate from, and how they have come to be still alive, but we believe that we know how to destroy them. The only way to kill a kite is to blow the head off.” “How can we blow the head off if we can’t even see them?” Daniel asked, “Ah yes that is the tricky part, the only time the kite materializes is when it is feeding.” “So we have to be there when it is feeding and then blow its head off. Great that should be easy” Connie added sarcastically. “No one said this job was going to be easy, you knew the possibilities of risks when you signed up. I want you to coordinate with the defense force and get these creatures handle efficiently, we don’t want this turning into a worldwide panic, because we can’t afford it.” And with that he disappeared.
“I guess I better go and see what else we can get from DNA.” Jimmy said making his exit. Connie slumped into her chair exhausted and feverish, she shivered for awhile then took three gulps of air to calm herself down, she looked up at Daniel’s worrying stare, she raised her hands, “I’m fine.” “Really? You don’t look fine. You look like you need to feed then get some rest.” “I’ll be fine; I guess I better go brief the force.” “I think not, especially not with the vibe you are throwing off. I will do it, you go feed and  then get some rest I’ll call you and see you tomorrow.” Connie knew that Daniel was right but she wasn’t one to admit when she was wrong, she was going to interject when Daniel interrupted her, “That was an order not a suggestion” he said putting the power of his influence behind the words. She was going to argue when suddenly she felt tired and exhausted from fighting. Connie sighed, “Okay I’ll go to the dance and then go home and get some rest. Good night Daniel.” “Good night Connie” she turned off her computer then left the office, she made her way to the underground bar Papa G’s, a werewolf club especially popular around the moon dance period, after she fed, she went home and fell asleep immediately.

THE KEEPERS

I
t was close to midnight, she could tell, she could feel it in her soul.  She looked up to the sky and watched the soon full moon. Four more days to the full moon, the moon fever burned through her body, it was controllable for now but soon the moon fever would consume her and rule her life, driving her towards the moon dance that went on beneath the city of Bridgetown. Connie sighed heavily as she made her way to another crime scene, where her partner Daniel already stood analyzing the body. She tugged up the zipper on her blazer to ward off the chill coming off the sea.  She stopped for a moment and looked around her; this one was on the east coast, on the Cattle Wash beach, something was wrong here she could feel it, as an empath she could feel the emotions of everyone and everything around her. Connie shields were usually strong enough to block the wave of emotions now bombarding her mind, but this one, this one was different, the emotions coming from it were threatening to drive her crazy. She could taste and feel the residue from the murder, the fear, the passion of the kill was overriding her senses, she quickly erected more blocks which would allow her to work.
Daniel looked up to where his partner stood with her eyes closed. He had smelled her from the moment she stepped out of her car, her rich vanilla and chocolate aroma drove his senses in to frenzy, he loved to smell her. His vampire sight allowed him to see the lines of strain on her face, they said that she was having a hard time blocking out the emotions emanating from this murder, the brutality of it was staggering and overwhelming to any senses. He made his way over to where she stood, “You okay?” Connie opened her eyes and looked up at Michael; he was a good foot over her five feet three inches. “I don’t think so, this one is worse than the last scene, it is harder to push out all the emotions at once.” He nodded, he knew that her being a damphire; half vampire and half werewolf, made her empathic skills greatly heighted, more so than an ordinary vamp. “This one has much more violence than the previous ones,” each murder was gruesome and held a level of horror to them, but with each one the killer seemed to be getting bolder, they; the Paranormal Enforcers Circle, formaly known as The Keepers, had been called in to the case after the first two killings, since then four more women were killed and the brutality and force of each murder led the Barbados police force to believe that they were not dealing with an ordinary killer, ordinary meaning human.
Two years ago the discovery of the underworld and its once well kept secrets of different life forms, was discovered by an innocent little girl; who saw something suck the life force from her father. Since then questions were asked, and reports came in of more and more bizarre deaths occurring around the island. The once quiet island of Barbados had become the breeding ground and heaven for the creatures of the underworld, and they had no way of defending themselves against the evils of this world full of things only heard or seen in books and movies. Fae, werewolves and vampires were among the few creatures to have been recorded in action in the last two years, but they were other things, other evils lurking in the dark, and it was just a matter of time before they too would be discovered and it was the PEC’s responsibility to ensure that didn’t happen.
Daniel; a two thousand old vampire and Connie; an emotive and damphire, were recruited to form a force in Barbados by the request of the Prime Minister to the special branch of Paranormal Observation in Canada.  They had made up the force of the PEC, but within the first year, due to the increase of unexplainable incidents the task force had grown to the number of forty persons. Daniel and Connie were the best in the field and were partners for over two years.
“Tell me what you feel?”Daniel asked her. Connie closed her eyes and slowly let her blocks down; she reached out with her senses using, testing and tasting the emotions of every living creature around her. All was to be expected, the emotions of fear, excitement, and death lingered at the scene, she was about to give up her search when a faint distant emotion touched and tingle the edge of her senses, she instantly went still, Michael watched her closely, “What is it?” “I don’t know but something feels dark- evil…” “Where is it?” “About a few feet away to our right in the alley by that blue house,” Daniel made a move towards the alley; Connie reached out her hand and placed it on Daniel’s arm to stop him. “No” “Why not?” “This is not our usual perp, I can’t make out the species but I know it is old, very old, older than you, it is also hungry and angry we have to be careful” Older than him, Daniel was two thousand years old, there weren’t a lot of vampires or other species of the dark that could rival his age. “What are you saying?” “I’m, saying that this thing feeds on death, it thrives on it, and if we go in there unprepared we will be dead. Until we know what we are dealing with I suggest we keep clear for now” Daniel looked at her, he always respected her judgment, and in the past her skills and gift had saved them more than once, he just didn’t think that he could go with it now, these women deserve justice, and if it meant risking his life to do that he had no problem of being the bait. Daniel made another move towards the alley, “Daniel” Connie warned. “I’ll be fine, just give me a minute okay stay here.” “I don’t think that that is a good idea” “Connie, trust me.” Daniel looked into her eyes, they were not many persons he would trust with his life but Connie was one of them, he saw fear in her eyes, real fear unlike what he had seen in her eyes before, whatever this thing was it had rattle her good. “Just in case keep your laser ready okay” he told her, she nodded.
Daniel inched closer to the alley, he stopped for a moment smelling the air using his vampire senses to feel what lurked in the alley, but he felt nothing which was odd, his sense had over two thousand years to reach a level of heighten perfection, yet he could not feel or sense anything coming from the ally. As he moved closer he turned his laser on, a slight hum broke the silence allowing him to know that he had power in his hands, the laser continued to hum in his hands sending pulsating bursts of warmth into his cold hands as he continued forward to the alley. A foot away he heard a screeching hiss, “Daniel, be careful,” Connie said to him, he turned and nodded. Then it attacked. It was a heavy mist suddenly clouding his sight, and his sight was excellent, he struck out but his hand struck nothing but air. What is this thing, he thought, a sent hit him full on, it smelled of death and decaying flesh. “Daniel, move to your right now!” Connie shouted, a white beam rent the air and hit the wall of the house, another hiss penetrated the air this time it was closer to him. “Daniel, Watch out!” Connie shouted, something foul lashed out at him, then a searing pain shout up his side, he grunted as he rolled to his left to deflect the impact of the hit. Then all went silent, Connie stood still, testing the air with her wolf senses there was nothing, she ran over to Daniel’s side, “Daniel” she touched him but there was no response, “Daniel” she called his name again, there was a soft grunt, then Daniel opened his eyes and looked up at her, she sighed with relief and smiled at him, then anger over took her and she hit him across his head, “Ow, what was that for?” “You idiot I told you not to go in you could have been killed” she argued, “Would you have missed me?” Daniel asked her, a glint of mischief twinkle in his eyes. Connie looked at him intently for awhile, “You know I would.” He smiled at her answer, he reached up with his hand and touched her cheek, “Thanks that’s twice now you saved my life” “Please don’t let there be a third” he laughed, “I promise, here help me up please” he reached out his hand and she took hold of it and pulled him up, “Lift up your shirt let me see.” She ordered him, he did as he was told, Connie looked at the three scratch marks on his right side, “They are already healing but you should still have them cleaned we have no idea what that thing was, or what disease it might be carrying” Daniel nodded in agreement.
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh!” a scream rent the air, “What was that?” “Look over there” someone screamed, “In the sky over the sea” everyone turned their attention to the sea, “What is it?” Connie asked Daniel “I don’t know, it looks alive but I’m not picking up any heat signature from it, you? Connie used her infrared to scan the object floating over the sea, “I’m not getting anything either.” “What about your empath?” “I’m trying now.”’ Connie reached out with her emotions and hit nothing but a sense of dread and death, “I don’t know what that thing is but it is full of evil and death, like the thing from the alley.” “Maybe they are related” Daniel suggested, Connie nodded, “They taste the same.” The creature then just disappeared, Connie and Daniel looked at each other worriedly, “We need to know what that thing is and fast.”
